The Science Van

Last week was a very special week. It was Science week! We did a whole bundle of experiments in class and in the hall!
We had some people from the 'Science Van' come to our school who travel all across New Zealand. They teach kids experiments like the bed of nails (when you hear that you might think OUCH!). It actually doesn't hurt... each nail is supporting your weight. If you were sitting on one single nail it would definitely hurt! A LOT!

But that's not all, there was another experiment called the waterfall effect. It plays a trick on the eyes and brain. If you focus on the center of the video attached, no blinking, no looking away, for 20 seconds, you will see. It supposedly used to hypnotize people, which I don't know if that works or not. What happens is your eye muscles start to freak out because they are working so hard to focus, your brain gets confused. Try it out then look at someone's head! We did, it was hilarious!

We also learned about Isaac Newton's 3 laws of motion and did some experiments around these! But that's a story for another time!

Remember science can be done everywhere, anytime and is all around us! We learned a lot of things about science and it was a blast! I hope I can go to the science van again one day.

Speeches

On Friday the 7th of September it was the Sunnyhills speech competition. I was the MC/Announcer of the comp along with Rebecca. All the speeches were brilliant. Luckily we didn't have to judge the competition, because I wouldn't know who to choose!

The winner of the competition was Jake Foster with his speech about Devices vs Sugar. The students from our class Auralie and Mia did amazing. Mia came 3rd! They all did a phenomenal job, all of the time practicing paid off.

Mentos and Coke

At the beginning of science week, Room 1 & 2 did the classic Mentos in a coke bottle experiment. The carbon dioxide in the soda (coke) reacts with the mentos very suddenly, shooting up into the sky and drenching anyone within range of the bubbly, volcanic-like soda. When the mentos was dropped in, using a very clear contraption, the coke came funneling up instantly. It was huge!

Traditional Korean Clothing

An amazing activity during our time with the Korean Teachers was the traditional clothing station. We got the opportunity to try on different traditional Korean clothing, mostly worn at festivals, the clothes were so soft and very comfortable!

Sunnyhills speech Final!

Congratulations Mia for getting 3rd place in the finals! Congratulations Auralie for competing in the speech finals!

Mia and Auralie did an awesome job with their speeches we all enjoyed listening to them. Mia's speech is about <<why Zoos are bad>>. Auralie's topic was on littering and the negative stigma around rubbish.

You should have been there! Their speeches were EPIC!

Korean Archery

On Thursday 13th we had an exciting Korean experience, doing fun activities native to Korea. This included Archery. We used small bows and arrows to hit targets. It was difficult for some of us to hit the targets, but some found it easy. We all loved the Korean experience. How lucky are we?

Walking Water

During Science week some students in room 1 became the teacher for the day and taught science experiments to the class. Donnacha's Science experiment was called 'Walking Water'. He filled two cups with water, placed two paper towels in each cup to another with yellow and blue in the outer cups and left the middle cup with no coloring. Then we waited for the science to happen. We looked at it after lunch and the food coloring had traveled up the paper towel, and into the middle cup coloring t green.

Magic Cup

This is Zaina's Vacuum cup experiment. The method was .... 

1. put a layor of water on the plate. 2. light the match and allow it to burn using a lemon slice to hold it straight. 3. Place the cup upside down over the match.

The air around the flame is pushed in all directions. Warmer air needs more space than cooler air! So, the air pushes under the small gap round the rim of the cup and lets the water in, pushing the water upwards!

We were so lucky to have some new friends join us in room 1 this Term. Bella, Steven and Kobe have all gone back to China :(. We will Miss them so much.

Big Foot Bike School!

We have been so lucky to have Big Foot come and teach us all about Bike safety. 

The training included: 

• What we should wear to protect our head, body and feet, 
• How to check our helmet for cracks 
• How to bike safely to, from and around the school, 
• Road rules, including what we do when we need to turn left or right,
• How to make sure we are in a 'bike ready' position, and 
• The four check process to ensure our bike is safe to ride,

Break out

Break out

The break out was so fun and I enjoyed it so much. We were all crowding around a table with all the clues that people had found and there were people at the table putting all the clues together. We had 45 seconds left to complete it, but we did have an extra 10 seconds.

Time Inquiry

This term Room 1 has been working on learning about time. 

We looked at different time zones around the world. We also looked at some countries that have the same time zone as us. Fiji was one of them. 

We also found out why 12 is at the top of the clock. In early Egypt, there were people that looked at the sky. They saw where the sun was. At 12.00pm the sun was at it's highest point. And, on a clock, the 12 is at the highest point. As time evolved the clock evolved to. It was made into sundials which were sticks planted into the earth. Then, the sundial evolved into the clock that we have nowadays. 

We have also found out that am stands for ante meridiem, which means before midday and pm stands for post meridiem which means after midday.

Our most recent work around time has been Analogue, Digital, and 24-hour clocks. We can now tell the difference between them. For example, six 0'clock pm is the same as 18.00 or 6.00pm. 

We have learned a lot about time. It hasn't just been part of our Maths it has also been part of our Inquiry

Warehouse Letter

Room 1 decided to send a letter to the Warehouse because they were asking a couple of students to buy a plastic bag in exchange for a token. They were just trying to help our school pool.

To whom it may concern,

My name is James Robb, I am a student at Sunnyhills school.

Three of my classmates were told to by a plastic bag for a token. It cost them ten cents for a bag. It says on your website you are trying to reduce the amount of plastic bags, so why do you have to sell a plastic bag for a token?

One trillion plastic bags are made every year, and approximately 380 billion plastic bags end up in the ocean. A large number of animals die every year.

I understand that the money from the plastic bags funded the school pool heat pump.  but I just don't understand why you have to buy a plastic bags to get a token. Instead of giving a customer a token when they buy a plastic bag, could you instead give the customer a token if they don't use a bag?

I like shopping at the warehouse because you always have bargains. Thank you for helping us get the heat pump. Thank you for reading this letter, I hope to stop selling plastic bags.

Room one and I decided to send a letter to the Wearhouse, it is about them encouraging people to buy plastic bags, just to put a token in the pot. All the tokens would go towards winning our school pool heat pump.

Dear The Warehouse Pakuranga

To whom it may concern

Hello, my name is Blake Pritchard, and I am a student from room 1 at Sunnyhills school. I am writing to you because I do not get why you have to buy plastic bags just to get a token. I have heard that three of my classmates have come to the Warehouse wanting to put a token in the box. However, they have been encouraged to buy a plastic bag, even though they had a reusable bag with them! All they wanted to do was try to get our school pool a heat pump.

I do like shopping at The Warehouse, your prices are super low. Thank you for the heat pump in our school pool, it is very warm in there now. In fact, I did go for a swim this morning and it was so warm I could have stayed in there the whole day. Before I would be begging to get out, that's how cold it was!

Did you know that one trillion plastic bags are being made right now, and over 380 billion of them go into the sea each year?

I found out that your website says that you are an environmentally friendly store, and "take pride in customer service." Though when you say that, some of your staff members are encouraging people to buy plastic bags. It's just preposterous! Still, it says you want to "help customers live more sustainably" Then why do you encourage people to buy plastic bags? It also says on your website that "we take waste and recycling seriously," it's better for both the environment and the business", yet your staff members encourage people to buy plastic bags.

I understand that the purchase of plastic bags is what funded our school pool heat pump. However, it has come to my attention, that the amount of plastic bags sold to our local store, is causing more pollution. As a class, we thought the money raised from reusable bags could go towards the tokens instead. Another option could be to sell compostable bags and remove the sale of plastic bags.      

I do like to shop at the warehouse, but I don't understand why we have to buy a plastic bag just to support our school, please stop the encouragement of plastic bags.

Room 1 were very happy that we finally made it into the Library this week.
